Why does Paypal say my Vanilla visa gift card has no money on it?

I got a gift card for christmas and I want to buy something online so I went to paypal and made an account. They had me type in a 4 digit code to confirm the card and now it’s confirmed but the money that on the actual card isn’t shown on paypal. How can I get my money on it?
So even though it says I have no money on it the money is actually there?

Because you just linked the card trough the PayPal your PayPal account balance is zero. You didn`t alimented the account. You can buy all you need because the money are there.
